Plovers Return

No not the most famous pub in England.

Last week a pair of Piping Plovers landed at Wasaga Beach. Protective enclosures will be erected by the Wasaga Beach Provincial Park.

Last summer was the 4th year running that Piping Plovers nested at Wasaga Beach. The 2 pairs nested under the safety of Canada’s Blue Flag and were watched over by a group of volunteers..Out of eight chicks  one survived. This chick was seen at its wintering grounds and then successfully made the journey northward, landing in Michigan.

A Beach Scene For A Rainy Friday

Diana Evans describes herself as “an Artist in Ontario with a cottage up at Wasaga Beach.” I think she should have added the words “very talented.”

I am useless at art and have nothing but admiration for people who can create these pictures. Her blog features much more of her delightful work. Well worth a visit

Saint George’s Day April 23rd

st-george-cross Saint George And The Dragon

We English may not celebrate as openly as other nations but “Happy Saint George’s Day.

Fittingly William Shakespeare is thought to have been born on April 23rd ( he was baptized on April 26th.)

“This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,—
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.”

From King Richard II

A High School Wasaga Beach??

There is a poll being conducted on the Barrie Examiner homepage.  It is in the middle of the page,  small and hard to see, but it is there. Please vote as the School Board may be keeping an eye on it.

On Line News Poll   14

Wasaga Beach has a population of over 16,000. There are only 1,700 people in Elmvale. For years children from Wasaga Beach have been bused to Collingwood, Stayner and Elmvale.

The current number is approximately 800.

Wasaga Beach is one of the fastest growing communities in Ontario.

Free Coffee At McDonald’s

mcds

Now I would love to believe that my comments on Tim Horton’s had the executives at McDonald’s HQ wracking their brains for ways of increasing their coffee business. However I don’t really think that the bigwigs at McDonald’s Place in Toronto were reading “Wasaga Beach Talking” when they decided to offer free coffee during breakfast hours for the next 2 weeks.

John Betts to be precise is the president of McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada.

Now the cost may only be $1-22 a cup but with Canadians drinking 36 million fewer cups in the last 12 months there is a battle for a larger share of this declining market.

Betts is obviously pleased that his company  “sold 4 million more cups of coffee in the fist quarter” of 2009.

Over 60% of Tim Horton’s sales occur in the morning and more than 50% of these are coffee. It is not hard to see who McDonald’s promotion is aimed at hurting. Shares in Tim Horton’s fell 32 cents yesterday to close at $30-47.

kfc-headWith all due respect to Colonel Sanders the coffee business is not chicken feed. During 2008 Canadians bought 1.8 billion cups of coffee from restaurants.  To the end of February this year that figure was 2% down or 36 million cups.

“Erbs.” What’s That All About

The mystery of the silent “H.”

Just one word I still cannot get used to hearing. “Erbs” or even funnier to my ears “Erbal Essence.”

Does anyone say “Hows your ead”, “You look very ealthy”, “That was a bit of a red erring” or “He/She is my eroe.”

When did Herbs loose their H???

And On The 8th Day God Created Tim Horton’s

McDonalds may have the slogan “I’m lovin it.” Starbucks may have the style . But my heart belongs to Tim Horton’s. AND I am not alone.

On my first visit to Canada I wondered where the long lines of cars were going to? Why were most fast food places empty but not the one selling coffee and donuts? And who was Tim Horton? What is a “double double?” What is a “triple triple” and how do you stay alive drinking them?

I Can’t Listen To Any More Hannah Montana Music

When my daughter was nearly six she went from adoring the Backyardigans to being Hannah Montana’s  self proclaimed number 1 fan of in about two weeks. Now a number of her friends also feel they are the number one fan as well. But anyway. Each night Hannah or is it Miley is on the television singing. She sings a lot. My daughter sings along. She plays the CD’s. It grates but she is very happy and I would never dream of stopping her as it is all quite innocent.

Not so innocent when she read that Miley ( Hannah?) had apologized for having some nude…. Read the rest of this entry »
