Wasaga Beach Power Surge;Neighbours Have No Hot Water For The Weekend
Could have been worse, the TV or beer fridge could be broken
It could have been much, much worse. Read on.
John Reid, electrician and owner of Wasaga Beach business ReTech Electric, has bought to my attention the growing importance of having Surge Suppression protection for today’s homes.
A colleague told him about a client who suffered an indirect lightning strike which fried his geo thermal pump motor, furnace motor and other electronic controlled systems such as his washing machine and dishwasher. ‘I’m guessing he used a protected power bar for his pc etc.
The poor chap had them all replaced and it happened AGAIN! Fortunately he managed to get his insurance to cover it but they all do cover such eventualities.
John continues “I have had 2 people call me recently asking if I have installed them at the main panel, I have not as yet and said so, but I asked why they would spend the money on this. Now I am starting to see how important they are.
These could save thousands of dollars and inconvenience and I for one will start to inform my customers so they can make the choice.
From my research the recommendation is to have one TVSS (Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor) installed at the main panel (with indicators showing it is working as you may not know they have already stopped a spike and are toast) and a decent power bar with sufficient capability to quench any remaining anomalies, for where the electronics plug in.
This is called a “tiered” or “cascaded” approach.
In fact some panel manufacturers are going to be including them as “built in” to their panels.”
Insurance companies do pay out for lightning strikes or any voltage spikes but there is a deductible. It is possible by having a certified TVSS installed they get a lower premium on your home or less deductible etc.
In any case the top end TVSS manufacturer actually covers up to $25,000 worth of damage if it doesn’t protect properly.
I don’t trust insurance companies and it is food for thought. Money will not replace all the digital photos or music collection lost on the computer.
