“For a quart of Ale is a dish for a King” William Shakespeare

Shop local, eat local AND Drink Local

Now we are finally getting some summer weather, there’s nothing better than sitting on the deck on a warm evening or enjoying a meal with a nice cold beer or cider. Coors, Canadian or Bud may be the big names but our local area is home to several excellent brewers.

Creemore Springs Brewery started in 1987 with a philosophy of local and fresh. Water from the famous Creemore Spring is just around the corner and initially the brewery only sold their product within a 50km radius. Success meant deliveries are now made further a field.
As well as sponsoring local events the brewery hosts 5 tours a day 7 days a week.

Flying Moneys!!!!!!!!! No not a result of one too many but a change of name for The Robert Simpson Brewery. Based on the waterfront in downtown Barrie, the company is changing its name to “Flying Monkey Craft Brewery.” To my mind a much more interesting change than Collingwood Ethanol becoming “Amaizeingly Green”  :)
Drinks such as Confederation Amber Ale, Antigravity Light Ale and Hoptical Illusion Almost Pale Ale are made by this family owned business with only 16 employees.

The Hockley Valley Brewing Company has only 2 employees plus a summer student. Even so the company that started in 2002 in Hockley has had to move to larger premises in Orangeville. How more local can you get than a beer called “Georgian Bay Dipper”?

Now cider. Apparently Great Britain has the highest cider consumption per capita and I remember it was almost a right of passage to have too much cider as a teenager in England. Why cider wasn’t produced in Ontario’s apple capital before 2008 is a mystery. But that is when the Thornbury Village Cidery 1st produced Peeler Cider; my wife’s favourite; maybe she is remember teenage years:)
Only local apples are used in the 55,000 sq foot brewery in Thornbury. And one could argue it is good for you; cider is high in antioxidants which help prevent heart disease, cancer and other ailments.

“He was a wise man who invented beer.”
-Plato

Cheers.
