Moving Checklist

More than 14 days before moving

  • Get boxes and moving supplies.
  • Donate any unwanted useful items to charity.
  • Dispose of household chemicals properly( old paint, caustic cleaners) and responsibly- contact your local toxic waste centre.
  • Arrange phone service to be set up at your new home.
  • Set up mail forward.
  • Arrange return of any borrowed cable TV equipment
  • Complete necessary change of address forms: driver’s license, health cards, insurance, employer, doctor, dentist, magazine subscriptions, memberships, bank accounts, credit cards.
  • If necessary: make travel arrangements, arrange transfer of car insurance and license plates, notify childrens’ school, register at new school, get copies of medical and dental records and if you have pets get copies of vet records.

8 to 10 days before moving

  • Return borrowed items.
  • Retrieve loan items.
  • Arrange for major appliances to be moved.
  • Arrange connection of utilities at the new home including water, electricity, cable, telephone and gas.
  • Dispose of flammable materials.

2 to 7 days before moving

  • Determine what you can bring if travelling by car, plane, train or bus.
  • Prepare installed items that you are taking with you.
  • Pack a suitcase with clothes and toiletries you will need for the first day in your new home.
  • Pack a special box with other essentials you’ll need for the first few days and mark the box clearly DO NOT MOVE.

Day before moving

  • Take down curtains and curtain rods.
  • Empty, defrost and clean refrigerator, clean stove.
  • Pack personal belongings, except alarm clock, necessary clothes, jewelry and bedding.

Moving day

  • Keep paperwork accessible.
  • Strip and dismantle beds.
  • Collect all keys and keep them in a safe place.
  • Final walk through: check all closets and cabinets.
  • Clean the premises that you are leaving, inspect with landlord.
  • If you are using a moving company, confirm the new address and delivery time with the driver; check and sign all the appropriate inventory forms with the supervisor.
