Moving house does not have to be stressful

If you are buying and or selling a house and do not want to move yourself then you will have to employ a professional moving company. Having moved my home from England to Canada I know advance planning works and  would recommend staring this search 10 weeks before moving day; enough time to get estimates, compare prices and check references. Additionally the best companies may not be available at short notice. Remember the summer months are normally the busiest and Fridays and month ends the most popular time for moving.

As in all walks of life word of mouth recommendations are the best. Ask friends and family  plus your Realtor and the local Better Business Bureau.  Contact the moving companies for an”estimate” rather than an actual quote.This more basic guide will allow you short list the companies that are in your price range and also double check what is included.

Canadian Relocation Systems suggest asking the following questions:

• Does your company sub contract its moving services?
• Which sub contractors could be used to move my home?
• Will the contents of my home be on one truck the entire time?
• What services are not included in this price and what do you charge for them?
• What training do your movers and or packers receive? Casual workers do not always have the skills, experience nor show the basic care for your property that you deserve.
• Can you provide references from other customers you have moved?

Now from your short list get actual quotes ensuring all the companies are quoting like for like so you can compare. Double check and check again what insurance is in place and what it covers. Cost is important but not the only factor to consider. Normally in life you get what you pay for and personally I put a lot of faith in recommendations.

Decision made! Get a written quote and do not pay the final bill until after the move is complete.
