Wasaga Beach Collects Toonies For Veterans Campaign
This seems appropriate on St. George’s Day.
Wasaga Beach residents have mounted a campaign to help send 3 veterans to the celebrations marking the 65th anniversary of D-Day in June. The aim is to raise $10,000 for airfare and accommodation. The money must be collected by the end of May.A Toonie can be left in the donation jar at “Beverly’s On Main” restaurant. 140 MainSt., Wasaga Beach. There are other collection jars around the town.
Bill Betteridge was the 4th man to get off of the first boat that landed on Juno Beach, June 6th 1944.
Orville Cooke was only 100 meters away from Bill Betteridge’s boat when it landed.
Bill Spencer arrived on June 5th.
As Winston Churchill announced to the British House of Commons on D-Day June 6th 1944:
“It is, therefore, a most serious time that we enter upon. Thank God, we enter upon it with our great Allies all in good heart and all in good friendship.”
