And On The 8th Day God Created Tim Horton’s

McDonalds may have the slogan “I’m lovin it.” Starbucks may have the style . But my heart belongs to Tim Horton’s. AND I am not alone.

On my first visit to Canada I wondered where the long lines of cars were going to? Why were most fast food places empty but not the one selling coffee and donuts? And who was Tim Horton? What is a “double double?” What is a “triple triple” and how do you stay alive drinking them?

Within a week I was addicted. Now hardly a day passes where I don’t drive through or walk to the counter and order a large coffee with milk. Every trash can has an empty Tin Horton’s cup in it. People shop for groceries with a Tim’s in one hand whilst the other hand pushes the trolley My dentist and doctor drink them during examinations. Donuts, sandwiches, soup or chili are an occasional treat. The breakfast sausage sandwich or bagel more of a temptress and as it is earlier in the day an easier vice to imagine I can allow myself.

But the coffee I cannot live without.I have mastered the new language: “double double” or “triple triple” are both self explanatory really. Unlike the pretentious “skinny latte with soya, a half tuck and a somersault.”

And what a success. What a business to admire.Maclean’s magazine reported on March 12th 2008:

“But there is now a Tim Hortons restaurant for every 12,500 Canadians, nearly double its closest competitor, McDonald’s. Through 2,750 Canadian stores, the chain controls 80 per cent of the coffee, doughnut and tea market — 90 per cent if you only count the coffee. When Don Schroeder took over as Tim Hortons’ new chief executive officer last week, replacing Paul House who became executive chairman, he inherited what has become the fourth-largest fast-food chain in North America when measured by market capitalization, largely on the back of Canadians’ insatiable demand for its beloved coffee.”

My name is Andrew Mckay and I belong to ” The Church Of Tim.”
